“Woke up got out of bed and dragged a comb across my head” nothing like a little of the beatles to get your morning started off right, add a little coffee, maybe a little bourbon in the coffee and your good to go at 5am.
Good to go on a pig hunt that is, so I am out of the house bright and early and headed south. I make it to the entrance of the killing fields in short order and start on the long wet hike in. The area were working is prone to flooding this time of year so we walk. It’s not bad but it does take time and by the time I got to the blind the pigs were in. This is good and bad, good that there are pigs and bad in that they were so close it took me 10 minutes to get even half way into my shooting lane. I sat stock still for 2-3 of those minutes in a stare down with two sows who didn’t seem to notice me but continued to stare right at my spot. With a single grunt, one turned and walked off and the other turned and looked like it was going nose down for a feed. Great now is my chance to move up, only 10-12 feet to go and clear shots all around, pigs for the freezer and a fun Saturday am in the bag. This is where the narrator comes in and tells everyone to “hold their horses” as I flex my leg to set my foot and move into position there comes another grunt and its f’ yea and game on in Pigville.
They took off into the brush about 20 feet to my right and here I go, last-ditch effort. I am charging thru brush and stumps (barefoot) as trees rake the mosquito net from my head and the long grasses try to drag me to the ground, the pigs are tromping merely thru the brush right next to me. I can hear them and I think I can smell them, but I can’t see them and I can’t find an open spot to really get off a shot, if I do see them.
So another beautiful morning in the bush for naught. Luckily it is a very pretty spot and not to far from the house so it’s a good way to start the day, but I won’t be making any sausage this weekend.
